[NEWS] Blast from the Past

The guys over at Engadget have posted this article from their BBS from 1985. The articles are awesome to read and for some of you will undoubtedly cause a bit of nostalgia. I wonder how we will look back on our blogs of today in 20 years time.

For those of you too young to know what a BBS (Bulletin Board System) was it is what we had before the internet.  You dialed your modem directly into the BBS’s modem bank.  I still remember when my local BBS got a second phone line, which meant two people could be online at once and we could chat real time it was amazing!

[Gadgets] Probably the best PC Mod I have ever seen

Now I appreciate the art of case modding but I would never mod my own machine I like a stylish looking case versus a boy racer look.  This PC Mod is probably the most stylish that I have seen.  I would have used blue instead of green though.  I have the Lian Li PCV-1200 its a slightly darker silver than in the photo.

[General] Blog Status

Well over the last few days I have worked on moving the blog from being hosted at www.blogspot.com to the new www.nzgadget.com domain.  I have also been working on the blogs logo and template tweaking here and there and listening to some suggestions by my good friend Ben from ben.run.  I have also decided to follow suit with Ben and add “Types” to my blog entries so you can skim past the entries that might not interest you, as if there would be any.

So far some of the types are:

  • [General] – General postings.
  • [News] – Technical news stories.
  • [Gadgets] – Cool new gadgets.
  • [Reviews] – Reviews of my toys.
  • [Applications] – Cool applications and tweaks.
  • [Projects] – Details on any projects I am working on.
  • [Hackware] – Geek-related clothing.

Now that things are set up and going I hope to start actually adding some more content.  I might also have the help of a few of you here and there as well with the posting and if you think its something you would like to contribute to I can set up an account for you, maybe.

[Applications] Synergy

Synergy is an awesome little utility that I came accross about a year ago. Simply it is a software based kvm.

Using a client/server architecture it allows you to use one keyboard and mouse to control multiple machines. You configure the server on one machine and tell it where the client machines exist ie Machine B is to the Right of Machine A, then configure your clients. Once it has been configured moving your mouse out of the right side of the screen on Machine A will take control of the mouse on Machine B at which point the keybord focus is for machine B. It gets better as it allows you to copy and paste text between machines!!

Even better yet is the fact that it uses TCP/IP as its comms protocol which has resulted in Windows, Mac OSX and Linux clients for it!
